Two hours into the actual game and I was having a blast.

It took a little while to get into the rhythm, putting together both the campaign they were in and party dynamics, so I spent a lot of time observing, defaulting to the existing party’s plans while I got the hang of it and grasped the mechanics of the site itself that rolled and did math for us. We were in the city of Waterdeep planning a heist, and I got some killer rolls when it came to passing myself off as a dignitary to a faraway land as part of my established false identity, even though we’d still ended up in combat after the halfling ranger with a short temper picked a fight.

I’d ended up sprawled on the bed on my side, pillows propping me up, and the cats were settled on either side of the laptop after trying valiantly to “help” me by swatting the keyboard.

“Guess I’d better heal your useless arses,” Bill said with a sigh, his voice tinny with the headphones I wore. While I hadn’t anticipated him being a Lawful Good, Hill Dwarf cleric upon seeing him, in game he slid into the character perfectly and it just fit.

My hit points were okay but the halfling took way more damage than any of us after failing a couple of saves and was probably near death.

“Might be a good spot to break,” Lenny said, already shifting in her seat. “Take five?”

“Yeah, let’s do that,” Gavin said, and while Lenny and Bill both left their seats, Robin merely stretched and adjusted the tabby on their lap. Gavin cracked open another beer.

I rubbed at my eyes—it was only nine-thirty at night, and I wasn’t tired, but the combination of staring at the screen, focusing on what was happening, and learning the online game system, seemed to be getting to me a bit.

“Okay so far?” Gavin asked, his voice warm in my ear.

I nodded. “Hope I’m not slowing everything down, though.”

He started to say it was fine but Robin waved me off as well and spoke first. “When this all started in March was the first time I ever played. I’m still learning stuff, so I think you’re doing great.”

“Yeah, you didn’t get the whole party into combat.” Gavin’s dig at them was light-hearted, though, a wide grin spreading across his face, though Robin rolled their eyes dramatically with mock offense taken.

“How do you and yours like Hope Falls?” Robin asked.

“They used to live here,” Gavin filled in, “but smartly escaped before the pandemic hit.”

“Right, like it’s much easier in Toronto where I don’t know anyone and can’t leave because I’m in a hotspot.” They lifted their glasses and pinched the bridge of their nose.

“Haven’t seen much of it,” I said. “Just...cleaning a lot. I’ve got a neighbour helping me but that’s it.”

“Your family?”

“It’s just me.”

Gavin frowned and broke in. “Who’s in the doorway then?”

My body iced over as I lay there staring at the laptop screen.

I almost barked out a laugh but neither of their expressions changed.
